Spatial ability is the ability to: - understand and remember the spatial relationships among objects
- manipulate images in space
- visualize how separate parts of complex physical systems interrelate
This ability can be viewed as a unique type of intelligence, distinguishable from verbal or mathematical froms of intellectual talent. Spatial ability is a specific talent that can contribute to success in mathematics, natural sciences, engineering, architecture, and other fields of study. People with strong spatial ability can imagine a shape from different viewpoints, or they can more quickly understand what something might look like backward, or they can more effectively recall and recreate images and sequences of images. The ability to perform laparoscopic or robotic surgery, to visualize the structure of complex molecules in chemistry, to understand a building from its interior and exterior, or to pilot high-speed aircraft—these all require spatial ability. The talent will continue to be in demand as technology drives many of tomorrow’s jobs such as medicine, physics, engineering, mathematics, finance, and other professional fields.
