Students wishing to establish eligibility for CTY Young Students courses must do so by taking the SCAT. Required scores for the subject areas are listed in the eligibility chart below. CTY has another eligibility option for students in 5th or 6th grade. The Spatial Test Battery (STB) is a computerized test of spatial ability. Research has shown that scores on the STB in conjunction with SCAT quantitative scores predict success in CTY math and science courses. Students who use the STB option to qualify must score at or above 500 on the STB and also have the SCAT quantitative scores indicated in the eligibility chart. For additional information on the STB, visit www.cty.jhu.edu/ts/stb_index.html or call 410-735-6278. Students take above-grade-level versions of the SCAT. Students eligibility is valid from the year they test through the summer after 6th grade, even if they choose not to attend the program immediately. In the past, SCAT eligibility was determined by percentile rank. We now use scaled scores. Previous qualifiers are still eligible. The score cut-offs for 5th and 6th graders were revised as of September 1, 2007. Students who are currently in 6th grade, who established eligibility as 5th graders, remain eligible for summer programs even if their scores were below the new cut-offs. Note to 6th graders: We also have summer programs for students who have completed 7th grade or above. Eligibility for these programs is based on SAT, ACT, or PSAT scores; all students who wish to participate in 7th grade and above programs MUST achieve qualifying scores on the SAT, ACT, or PSAT to qualify.
