The CTY/MMLA Language Immersion Program is held on the campus of Hampshire College which is located three miles from downtown Amherst, Massachusetts, in the historic Pioneer Valley. Hampshire College was established in 1970 as a member of the Five Colleges system, one of the oldest and most successful consortia in American higher education. Hampshire’s signature emphasis on a multidisciplinary, multicultural curriculum makes it an ideal host for the Language Immersion Program. The 800-acre campus of former orchards, farmland, and forest combines pastoral beauty with the liveliness that derives from its location within one of the country’s leading educational centers. Hampshire’s Cultural Village provides unique international resources on the campus. It includes: - The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art that houses the work of the famed creator of “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” and serves as an international center for children’s literature and art.
- The National Yiddish Book Center shares the treasures of rescued Yiddish books, representing a thousand years of Jewish history and culture, and contemporary Jewish creativity.
- The Institute for Science and Interdisciplinary Studies (ISIS) brings science and the community together to solve difficult environmental problems. Projects include Energy Choices, encouraging sustainable energy use, a national military-waste cleanup and the Secoya Project in the Ecuadorian Amazon.
