Language Immersion Program for Grades 6-9
Amherst, Massachusetts
Hampshire College

Program Dates: June 29 - July 25, 2008

Welcome to the Center for Talented Youth/Middlebury-Monterey Language Academy Language (MMLA) Immersion Program, a four-week residential summer program for gifted students in grades 6 - 9. The Language Immersion Program provides a rich academic and residential environment where students who love languages and other cultures learn their target language 24/7. The program combines a full-immersion experience with an array of events, trips, and activities which set the cultural context for the languages participants are studying. The curriculum is designed by Middlebury-Monterey especially for middle and high school students. Whether students want to study Spanish or French or a language like Arabic or Chinese, two critical languages not often available to middle and high school students, participants who enroll in the Language Immersion Program will gain skills in all five language areas – speaking, writing, reading, listening, and cultural understanding.

For over twenty-five years, CTY summer programs have provided students with exceptional academic abilities the opportunity to develop those skills to the highest possible level. For over ninety years, Middlebury College has been the pre-eminent language immersion program in the United States. The Language Immersion Program builds upon these traditions and offers CTY students a new set of courses and an exciting immersion teaching approach.

The Language Immersion Program is a partnership between the Center for Talented Youth and the Middlebury-Monterey Language Academy a program of Middlebury College and the Monterey Institute of International Studies, two institutions that have long been recognized as leaders in language education and in particular in full-immersion language education.

The CTY/Middlebury-Monterey Language Immersion Program is open to all CTY Talent Search participants who will have completed grades six, seven, eight, or nine by this summer. You may either apply online for this program, or download an application. Students in grades 7-9, when completing the online application, at the bottom of the first page, select “Grades 7 and above Verbal/Humanities courses (CAA).”  Students in grade 6, please select “Grades 2-6 Verbal/Humanities courses.” These selections will activate the dropdown menu on the course selection page of the online application to include the language immersion courses. Please select these options even if you do not have qualifying scores on file. If you happen to receive a response that your child is ineligible for a language immersion course, please call the registration office 1-800-393-6095 and they will resolve the problem. Financial aid is available to all participants based on need. In addition, several special need-based scholarships are designated for students enrolled in Chinese who are CAA and CTY qualified.
