Summer Programs for 9th-12th Graders in Nanjing, China

2008 Catalog

Registration for our program in Nanjing, China is now closed. There are still courses available for eligible students in our program in Monterrey, Mexico, as well as at the Civic Leadership Institute.

Welcome

Welcome to CTY's program in Nanjing, China—a three-week residential summer program for academically talented high school students in grades 9 and above. With its rich history and population of over 1.3 billion and growing, China offers a wealth of challenges and opportunities for CTY students to explore as we move into the global community of the 21st century. CTY Nanjing brings together students from all over the United States and the world to immerse themselves in China’s past and engage the major questions facing China today. During their time in Nanjing, students learn about China, tackle conversational Mandarin, and experience Chinese life and culture—including dining on the same food Chinese students typically eat. Throughout the process, students gain an unusual educational experience, one geared both to their high abilities and to their need for peers who share their academic abilities and their love of learning.

Capital city for the Jin, Song, Qi, Ming and other dynasties, Nanjing has played a pivotal role as a center of government and culture throughout the history of China. Nanjing is also home of the Hopkins-Nanjing Center. Since 1986, Hopkins-Nanjing Center has been educating future leaders in Sino-American relations. It has hosted visitors from Bill Clinton to Henry Kissinger to George Bush. Moreover, it has recently undergone a $19 million renovation complete with new classroom and library space and has opened up its air-conditioned educational and living facilities to CTY students.

As you read through this catalog, you will learn more about what we have to offer and how our courses can help highly able students explore their potential to the fullest. If you have already experienced our summer programs, we welcome you back—albeit this time, on the other side of the world.

How to Use this Catalog
Please read carefully through each section of the catalog. You will find plenty of information about our program and answers to many questions you may have. For quick answers to specific questions, view the FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) section.
