Baltimore, Maryland Living Classrooms Foundation The Living Classrooms Foundation (LCF) of Baltimore, in conjunction with Johns Hopkins, is in its eighth summer of sponsoring a site dedicated to the hands-on exploration of marine sciences. LCF is a non-profit organization for alternative education that serves students of all ages and provides over 35 different land and shipboard programs to more than 50,000 students each year. The home base for students taking Marine Sciences courses is the College of Notre Dame of Maryland. Founded in 1873 by the School Sisters of Notre Dame, the college is located in a quiet residential neighborhood in the northern part of Baltimore. Students spend one-half of the session living and studying at the Notre Dame campus. They spend the other half of the session traveling aboard the LCF ships Mildred Belle, Sigsbee, or Lady Maryland. At mid-session, students who began the session in Baltimore embark on their trip, and those who began in the field return to Notre Dame. While Marine Sciences courses are a great deal of fun, they also require a significant amount of both physical and mental work. Teamwork is essential. In the field-based aspects of the Marine Sciences program, the residential experience more closely resembles camping than typical campus living. All students participate in the daily operation and maintenance of their vessels, and those in the Oyster and Blue Crab courses also camp at various primitive shoreside sites during their field experience. Students share with the staff the responsibilities of setting up and striking camp, cooking, and cleaning. On the Notre Dame campus and the educational vessels, students are supervised by CAA resident assistants and instructed by LCF educational staff. Important: Enrollment at this site is limited to 70 students per session. For this reason, students are urged to consider alternative course choices at the Bethlehem, Bristol, Easton, Santa Cruz, or Thousand Oaks sites. Transportation: A student shuttle service is available only from Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI) and Baltimore’s Penn Station. You will receive maps, directions, and shuttle service details with your course notification.
