Joining SET

If you just qualified for SET in this year's Talent Search, congratulations! Here are answers to some questions you might have.

Do I need to notify SET that I qualified?

  • No, if you took the SAT through CTY's Talent Search. SET will automatically be notified of your scores.
  • Yes, if you took the SAT through another Talent Search or after January. SET will not automatically be notified. Please send a copy of your SAT score report to SET. You may send a fax, pdf or jpg, or photocopy.

How do I join SET?

To join SET, you must complete and return the SET registration materials enclosed with your invitation to join SET.  (At this time, these materials are not available online.)

  • Invitations were mailed in the end of March to students who qualified for SET in CTY's 2007 Talent Search and to students from beyond CTY whose SAT score reports we had received at that time.
  • If you qualified for SET in 2007 but have not yet received an invitation, please contact setcty@jhu.edu or call 410-735-6120.

Will I receive special recognition for my score at the local CTY Awards Ceremony?

  • Yes, if you participated in CTY's 2007 Talent Search, qualified for SET in the 2007 Talent Search, live in one of the 19 states where CTY holds Awards Ceremonies, and we received your scores by the end of February, you will be invited to and recognized at your local CTY Awards Ceremony.
  • No, if you did not participate in CTY's Talent Search, or if you live in a state where CTY does not hold Awards Ceremonies. Your name will be listed in the awards program under SET, but you will not automatically be invited to attend a ceremony. If you fall in this category and would like to attend a ceremony to receive your SET certificate, please call Talent Search at 410-735-6278 and we will try our best to accommodate you.
Note: If you did not participate in CTY's Talent Search, you will not be eligible for other awards (e.g., highest math, verbal, or combined SAT scores in your state). You will be honored simply for your SET qualification.

What is the Grand Ceremony, and can I attend?

The Grand Ceremony is a national ceremony for the very top 7th and 8th grade students in CTY's Talent Search. Students who meet the Grand Ceremony score cutoffs on the SAT or ACT are invited to attend. Most students who qualify for SET will meet these cutoffs. At this special recognition ceremony, students receive a medal honoring their outstanding academic achievements. Lunch and tours of the Hopkins campus are offered after the event. Read about the 2006 Grand Ceremony and see photos from the event.

The 2007 Grand Ceremony will be on Sunday, June 10th at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD.  Please see the Awards Ceremonies FAQs for more information. If you are eligible to attend and wish to attend but have not received an invitation by April 30, please call 410-735-6278 or email  ctyinfo@jhu.edu

I qualified for SET several years ago but did not join at that time. Can I join now?

Yes. If you qualified in a CTY Talent Search, we should have a record of your SAT score. If we do, we will send you another registration packet after you contact us. If you did not qualify through CTY, you will need to send us a copy of your SAT score report before we can mail you a registration packet.
