Discovery Series: One-Day Family Experiences

All CTY Talent Search participants are eligible to attend Family Academic Programs. There are no minimum qualifying scores required, so do not wait for test scores to sign up.

Lincoln Center: New York, NY
Want an inside look into the Harlem Renaissance? Jazz musician and historian, Loren Schoenberg, and his young   jazz ensemble will take you on an exciting musical and historical ride through the early foundations of jazz in Harlem. Want to participate in musical comedy improv? Frank Spitznaegel and the actors and slapstick comedians of Horseplay want you to join them in creating plots, dialogue, characters, and songs right on cue! Peter Flynn, performer and director, will discuss the impact the arts have on our lives. And with the help of lively guides, you will learn about the history, legends, and architecture of some of the grand theaters, including the Metropolitan Opera House. This program truly is a unique occurrence—one in which you will discover, express, and explore your own creativity.

The Huntington Library, Art Collections, & Botanical Gardens: San Marino, CA
Celebrate creativity, beauty, and the natural world at this spectacular educational and research center. Tour the Art Collections to learn how to interpret art and create your own landscape masterpiece. Explore the Library Collections focusing on early manuscripts and try your hand at calligraphy, illumination, and bookbinding. Seek out and collect plant specimens from different environments, dissect them under magnification, and take them home for further study.

National Building Museum: Washington, D.C.
Your help is needed in creating a CiTY in the Museum’s historic Great Hall! Come to one of Washington’s most spectacular structures and become an architect, engineer, and city planner all in one day! Design and erect your own building, help organize a city, and work on an engineering team to put up a bridge. Through tours, interactive discussions, and hands-on activities, you will learn how communities are planned and created.

Oceanquest & Massachusetts Maritime Academy: Buzzards Bay, MA (Cape Cod)
What could be better than a “Day on the Bay” in beautiful Cape Cod? This program has been designed specifically for CTY and has it all! Take a mini ocean research voyage and, while enjoying the sea breeze, conduct scientific experiments, such as trawling for plankton, water sampling, and testing the chemical make-up of the ocean. Learn the environmental significance and mechanism of wind energy by touring a turbine site. Take part in an ecological exploration of tide pools filled with curious creatures such as sea stars, barnacles, and bryozoans. Tour the Enterprise, the Academy’s training ship, which is a floating classroom, outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment. This is a program like no other—water, wind, and wetlands!  A barbecue lunch will be provided.

Monterey Bay Aquarium: Monterey, California
Experience the wonders of Monterey Bay by taking what you learn on shore and applying it aboard the Aquarium’s sailing vessel. Begin the day with a private sea otter feeding and training session at the Aquarium, as well as a guided tour of the galleries with a naturalist to get an insider’s view of the exhibits. Take a guided walk along historic Cannery Row to Fisherman’s Wharf. Board the Derek M. Baylis, a 65-foot sailboat designed for ocean research, and work with naturalists: get your hands wet gathering plankton, testing water samples, and observing the fascinating bottom-dwelling creatures in the samples. Along the way, you may get to see whales, dolphins, and sea otters!

This program is priced separately on the registration form. It starts at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 5:30 p.m.

Registration Information
At least one parent or guardian must register and attend with the student(s). Siblings will be admitted only if they have been registered for the event. All students and siblings must be at least 9 years of age to attend all Discovery programs. Registration is strictly limited, and participants will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. These are popular events, and locations fill up quickly. Please watch this website for the most up-to-date information of program details and site closings.

You may register for the above programs by downloading a Discovery Series Registration Form (requires Adobe Acrobat) or by Registering Online.

Payment Information
Payments submitted will be processed automatically upon receipt. However, your family’s reservation is secured only when you receive your written confirmation. In the event that the program is filled, you will be issued a complete credit and put on a waiting list. Please do not purchase non-refundable airline tickets or make hotel reservations until you receive your registration confirmation.

Please note that all past due balances (for any CTY program) must be paid prior to registration for a family academic program. All payments will be applied to past due balances first.

Cancellation Policy
For cancellations up to 30 days prior to the event, registrants will be charged a processing fee of $25 per family for one-day events. From 29 to 15 days prior, registrants will be charged one-half of the total amount paid. There will be no credit for any cancellations received less than 15 days before the event.

Logistics
Specific information pertinent to your location, including exact times and directions to the event, will be mailed to you prior to the program date. Information about lunch will be provided in the confirmation materials.
