Family Programs proudly announces the expansion of our Creative Connections Series which invites Talent Search participants in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades and their families to attend one-day and overnight events in the spring and fall of each year. Traditionally, these programs have a significant outdoor component, and strive through hands-on experiences to expose families to topics in history, science, and the arts. | Location | 2007 - 2008 Dates | Pacific Asia Museum - Pasadena, CA Come join us for a hands-on exploration of Asian art and culture! With guidance from the museum's artist-instructors, learn about the role of animals in Asian art and then create your own animal drawings. Learn both Chinese and Japanese characters in an interactive calligraphy and sumi-e (ink painting) workshop and then create your own scroll to take home. Enjoy a guided tour of the museum's galleries and courtyard. It's all sure to evoke inspiration, and the Southern California Haiku Study Group will help you capture the day with your own unique haiku. Discover Asia close to home!

Sunday, October 21, 2007 | Philadelphia Zoo - Philadelphia, PA Here's your chance to see the zoo in a whole new light...moonlight! You will meet interesting critters; visit the Rare Animal Conservation Center and observe fragile species like the douc langur and kea; and go behind-the-scenes with a zookeeper and visit the unique naked mole rat exhibit. You will participate in activities throughout the night to learn how you can help save wildlife, and even create a project to start your own conservation effort at home! Enjoy this fun, educational experience of getting to see animals under the cloak of darkness, one of their liveliest times!

Saturday, October 27 - Sunday, October 28, 2007 | Mystic Aquarium & Institute for Exploration - Mystic, CT Take a personalized tour of the outdoor marine mammal and bird exhibits and observe the beluga whales, sea lions, and more--and peek behind-the-scenes to see what it takes to make an aquarium run. You will also tour the indoor fish, invertebrate, and reptile exhibits to see sharks, piranhas, and more. Participate in two amazing interactive activities: the Ray Touch Pool and the XD Theater, with a 3-D ride of a lifetime! Learn how and why sea lions are taught certain behaviors in an exclusive sea lion training session. Immerse yourself in a wonderful underwater world experience!

Sunday, November 4, 2007 | The Reginald F. Lewis Museum of African American History & Culture - Baltimore, MD Take a journey to uncover the secrets of the Underground Railroad. Meet Harriet Tubman, a runaway slave who became known as the "Moses of her people." Discover the secrets of the Underground Railroad through storytelling and song. Learn how to use secret codes and how to make a quilt patch, just as the slaves did, to guide you to freedom. Travel on a tour to learn about the various paths to freedom taken by enslaved and free African Americans. During this hands-on, interactive day, you will experience a uniquely American story of the struggle for liberty, equality, and self-determination.

Sunday, November 11, 2007 | Pacific Science Center - Seattle, WA Take an educational journey--explore the night sky in the Planetarium; take a trip to the tropics in the Tropical Butterfly House; and do the Jurassic Jitterbug at the Dance with the Dinosaurs exhibit. In the Strange Astronomy workshop, delve into the mysteries of outer space as you simulate a black hole, investigate the density of neutron stars, and learn about phenomena scientists still can't explain. After a night spent sleeping among the exhibits, wake up to a live science demonstration and an IMAX film. Life is boring without discovery, so come discover science as never before!

Saturday, November 17 - Sunday, November 18, 2007 | Aquarium of the Pacific - Long Beach, CA Take a journey of discovery through the world's largest ocean at this extraordinary aquarium. You will get up-close to some remarkable inhabitants of the deep--sharks, sea stars, octopuses, and more. Learn how, with their highly developed senses and amazing adaptations, these unique sea creatures track down their next meal. This interactive, hands-on program will help you take a bite out of some predator myths as we investigate the creatures of the deep blue sea!

Sunday, May 4, 2008 | New York Botanical Garden - New York, NY Learn about plants from around the world--as well as from your own neighborhood--during a day of workshops and discoveries at the Garden's 250 acres of plant collections, native forest, and one-of-a-kind facilities. Step into the shoes of a field botanist to observe and document amazing plants from all over the world. Discover the ecology of natural habitats found throughout the Garden, participate in hands-on environmental programs, and engage in exciting science activites. This is the "Grand Museum of Plants", a unique place to explore and experience the wonders of nature.

Saturday, May 17, 2008 | Chesapeake Bay Foundation at Phillip Merrill Environmental Center - Annapolis, MD This exciting program will begin at the Phillip Merrill Environmental Center which is considered one of the "greenest" buildings in the country. You will investigate the meadow and forest habitat, and learn about the connection between the health of the land and its effect on water quality. Climb aboard a workboat to investigate the health of the Bay by conducting a biological survey. You will use a variety of gear to catch and identify fish and see what is living in the Bay. Practice gyotaku, Japanese fish printing, to discover your artistic side and create a memento of your "Day on the Bay"!

Registration Information At least one parent or guardian must register and attend with the student(s). Siblings will be admitted only if they have been registered for the event, and, in general, only if their age is within two years of the program grade limit. Registration is strictly limited, and participants will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. These are popular events, and locations fill up quickly. Please watch this website for the most up-to-date information of program details and site closings. You may register for the above programs by downloading a Creative Connections Registration Form (requires Adobe Acrobat) or by Registering Online. Payment Information Payments submitted will be processed automatically upon receipt. However, your family’s reservation is secured only when you receive your written confirmation. In the event that the program is filled, you will be issued a complete credit and put on a waiting list. Please do not purchase non-refundable airline tickets or hotel reservations until you receive your registration confirmation. Please note that all past due balances (for any CTY program) must be paid prior to registration for a family academic program. All payments will be applied to past due balances first. Cancellation Policy For cancellations up to 30 days prior to the event, registrants will be charged a processing fee of $25 per family for one-day events. From 29 to 15 days prior, registrants will be charged one-half of the total amount paid. There will be no credit for any cancellations received less than 15 days before the event. Logistics Specific information pertinent to your location, including exact times and directions to the event, will be mailed to you prior to the program date.
