CTYOnline Distance Education - AOL Help

Congratulations on being one of the many fine folks who connect to the Internet through AOL! In order to make use of our web site and courses, please consider the following guidelines:

Screen Names

Before applying, please pick a Screen Name for your student. Once set, your student's Screen Name should remain the same throughout the term. CTYOnline's coordinators, registrars, instructors and fellow students will use the Screen Name to communicate with you. If the student changes to a different screen name in the middle of a course, contact with us may be lost or delayed.

Note: most of the common personal names have already been taken by other users. If you've just now chosen to be Judi, you will probably get a name like Judi24601. Log off and log back on to be certain you know your screen name.

Parental Controls

We join AOL in wanting kids to be safe online. That's why the student sections of our online community are password protected. However, depending on the course being taken, some parental settings may prevent your student from accessing our courses and/or communicating with their instructor.

If you are experiencing errors, try accessing the course from your Master screen name and see if that works. If the Master screen name can use the course but the student screen name cannot, Parental Controls is responsible.

  1. Kids Only will prevent most of our courses from functioning, and is not recommended.
  2. Young Teen may block the web-based Writing courses, Destination Math, Academic Systems, and various technical support sites. If you choose this setting, please set Custom Controls to allow email and attachments from and . Other addresses may also be needed for specific courses.
  3. Mature Teen should work with most of our courses, except for Academic Systems. This is the recommended setting if you choose to activate Parental Controls.
  4. General Access does not provide any filtering, so it should work with all of our courses.

AOL used to offer more flexible custom controls that could be familyigured to allow or deny specific internet domains. However, that service was removed in version 5. For additional information, AOL users can visit Keyword: Parental Controls.

Upgrade your Web Browser

Some of our online courses (such as WebCT and the Whiteboard) may not work in the AOL browser. In order to use these sites, you must minimize your AOL window and open a standard web browser (such as Firefox) instead.
