Descartes' Cove Math Series: Measurement

The Rafting Journey

NCTM Standards for Measurement, Grades 6-8

  • Understand measurable attributes of objects and the units, systems, and processes of measurement
  • Apply appropriate techniques, tools, and formulas to determine measurements

Board the raft and row it all around the island, stopping first at Shell Beach. Turn over each shell to find hidden problems and treasure.

The rafting journey continues all around the island, floating under magnificent rock bridges and through waterfalls

Use tools to solve many of the problems, such as the movable ruler and protractor.

Rowing through calm waters around the east side of the island is easy. Hold on when you start hitting the choppy seas near Hypatia's inlet! If you succeed, you'll have what you need to build a hot air balloon for your escape.
