Descartes' Cove Math Series: Data Analysis & Probability

The Mining Cave Expedition

NCTM Standards for Data Analysis & Probability, Grades 6-8

  • Formulate questions that can be addressed with data and collect, organize, and display relevant data to answer them
  • Select and use appropriate statistical methods to analyze data
  • Develop and evaluate inferences and predictions that are based on data
  • Understand and apply basic concepts of probability

On the far side of the Cove lies the reinforced steel door that leads to the mining caverns. Unlock the door, enter the tunnel, and jump into the wooden cart to begin the expedition.

Maneuver your rickety cart through the tunnels to the Limestone Caves, filled with stalagmites and stalactites to explore. Buy a hint if you need help on the problems.

Stay low when the cart enters Bat Tunnel, and hang on when it careens down into the Sparkling Cavern. If you make it this far, you will soon find the entrance to Hypatia's Inlet, where you must pass ten challenges before beginning the Final Quest.

If you succeed, you will have everything you need to make your escape in a submarine.
