Center Scholars Program

Are you a Center Scholar?

  • Do you have an interest in exploring medical research as a career?
  • Would you like to learn more about Genome Science?
  • Are you motivated?
  • Do you demonstrate leadership?

If you answered yes to these questions and self-identify with a historically underrepresented minority group, then The Center Scholars Program might be a good fit for you!

The Center Scholars Program, developed by CTY and Dr. Andrew Feinberg's Center for Excellence in Genome Science (CEGS), was designed to encourage CTY qualified, historically under-represented minority students to pursue a career in scientific research, particluarly the field of genomics. This program is comprised of three parts: CTY Summer Programs Genetics course, CTY Summer Programs Genomics course, and a six week research internship. During the CTY Summer Programs components, the Center Scholars receive scholarships which cover tuition and fees, room and board and travel to and from the CTY site for the Genetics and Genomics courses. The summer following the successful completion of this coursework, Center Scholars are invited to participate in a 6-week paid summer laboratory internship performing research related to genetics or genomics. The dates of the internship typically coincide with the CTY summer program sessions.

In addition to the CTY summer programs course work, Center Scholars are invited to partipate in two Family Academic Programs events. Each student may attend one of the Pathways to College seminars, as well as the one day seminar on Biotechnology at the National Institute of Health. Tuition for the student and one adult are provided by the Center Scholars Program.

While there is no age requirement for program application; students must have completed high school biology before they can enroll in the CTY Genetics course during the summer. Students must also be 16 years of age before they enter into the internship component of the program. The program coordinator will work with individual students to navigate their way through the program.

How and when do I apply?

Applications to the Center Scholars Program are accepted throughout the year. Admission to the program is done on a rolling basis until all positions are full. Just print the Center Scholars Application and send it to CTY, Attention: Vicky Schneider.

The Center Scholars Program is funded by the NHGRI in an effort to increase minority presence in the genome sciences at the PhD level (www.genome.gov).  Program applications, additional program and financial aid information can be obtained by contacting Vicky Schneider at  vschneider@jhu.edu or 410-735-6219.
